Safety glasses sold in the USA must adhere to strict standards and regulations, as well as pass rigorous tests before being able to be sold as safety glasses. There are two main types of USA safety protection ratings: basic impact and high impact. Basic impact safety glasses are given a marking of Z87 if they pass the tests and reach the specific standards as set by the ANSI (American National Standards Institute). If the lenses do not crack, break or chip then they will pass the test and be given a basic impact safety rating. High impact safety glasses must pass much harder tests to be given a Z87+ rating. High impact safety tests involve both the lenses and the frames as a single unit. A ¼ inch steel ball is shot at the glasses at a speed of 150 feet per second. Only if neither the lenses or frames crack, chip or break, nor do the lenses come away from the frames will the glasses be given a high impact safety rating by the ANSI.
