Safety Glasses

Safety glasses sold in the USA must adhere to strict standards and regulations, as well as pass rigorous tests before being able to be sold as safety glasses. There are two main types of USA safety protection ratings: basic impact and high impact. Basic impact safety glasses are given a marking of Z87 if they pass the tests and reach the specific standards as set by the ANSI (American National Standards Institute). They are tested by dropping a 1 inch steel ball onto the lenses from a height of 10 feet. If the lenses do not crack, break or chip then they will pass the test and be given a basic impact safety rating. High impact safety glasses must pass much harder tests to be given a Z87+ rating. High impact safety tests involve both the lenses and the frames as a single unit. A ΒΌ inch steel ball is shot at the glasses at a speed of 150 feet per second. Only if neither the lenses or frames crack, chip or break, nor do the lenses come away from the frames will the glasses be given a high impact safety rating by the ANSI.

Despite most people only requiring basic impact USA safety glasses, it is always advised to purchase the maximum protection available to ensure you are covered for all possibilities and circumstances. Better safe than sorry!

Modern USA safety glasses lenses are usually made from polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is much lighter than traditional materials such as glass and some types of plastic. It is also much more shatter-resistant. However, polycarbonate scratches much more easily than other materials, so it is recommended you purchase safety glasses with an anti-scratch coating to prolong the life span of your new glasses. You may also want to purchase a restrainer strap so that you can let your glasses dangle around your neck when you are not using them - this prevents you losing them or them getting broken or damaged when you place them down.

USA safety glasses come with a range of different lens options too. Although many people are happy with clear lenses, you can choose from other lenses such as polarized, tinted, mirrored and anti-fog. Polarized lenses are great for those that are working in bright conditions as it helps minimize irritating glare; tinted lenses can help increase contrast between colors that can be ideal for those that take part in shooting sports and fishing; anti-fog lenses are perfect for those working in humid climates.

You also have the option of buying prescription or non-prescription lenses. Prescription safety glasses can only be purchased from an eye care practitioner or opticians, however non-prescription safety glasses can be found in most hardware or building supply stores, or sports stores.

There are a huge range of safety glasses that are designed and manufactured in the USA. Some of the most popular brands include: AOSafety, Pyramex, All Safe, and Crews. They all offer fantastic and affordable USA safety glasses.
